Arctic Biodiversity Trends 2010: Selected Indicators of Change
Posted: 14th July 2010
The ‘Arctic Biodiversity Trends 2010’ report was released in May by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna Working Group (CAFF). The report was compiled by the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP), a partner of the 2010 BIP, and presents the findings of 22 biodiversity indicators which track Arctic trends in populations of species, the integrity of ecosystems and the status of ecosystem services.
The report provides evidence of serious changes in the Arctic caused by climate change, contaminants and unsustainable harvesting of species. The changes include a loss of sea ice, tundra and peatland habitats, and declines in species such as caribou and Arctic shorebirds, all of which have significant consequences for global biodiversity as well as indigenous Arctic communities.
